EMPOWERING THE NARRATIVE: ZESCO ENGAGES WITH EASTERN PROVINCE JOURNALISTS AND COUNCILLORS
As Zambia transitions from a drought-induced hydroelectricity deficit towards a sustainable and climate-resilient energy mix with solar leading the way, keeping the public informed is crucial.
Power utility, ZESCO Limited on August 15 2025 hosted a media engagement meeting in Chipata, Eastern Province, bringing together local journalists to address the information gap in the electricity sub-sector.
ZESCO Chief Operating Officer Eng. Peter Chamfya highlighted Zambia's momentous energy shift from drought induced hydroelectricity towards solar energy, and other sustainable sources.
Meanwhile ZESCO Director Corporate Support Services, Chama Nsabika, emphasised the importance of collaboration and information sharing between ZESCO and the media, ensuring accurate and timely information reaches the public.
And Professor Lackson Kasonka, Permanent Secretary-Special Duties said government is ready to support renewable energy projects that will enhance electricity generation.
“Solar is one such renewable energy source that the Republican President has urged us to explore. If there is anything we have in abundance as a country is the sunlight. Yet over the years we have not been able to utilise this resource and generate power for ourselves. Today we are witnessing a solar power boom period,” he said.
The national power utility further used its time in Chipata District to engage councillors and share updates on the state of electricity supply in the country and plans to mitigate the deficit.
Officially opening the meeting, Chipata Mayor George Mwanza commended ZESCO for sharing information on efforts being made to address the power deficit, particularly investments in renewable energy with solar leading the charge.
He also urged councillors to support ZESCO in combating vandalism which is frustrating the utility from providing stable and reliable electricity supply.
This engagement came after the groundbreaking ceremony for the Chipata West 100MW Solar PV project, which aims to contribute to Zambia's ambitious 1,000MW solar power target. Located in Chief Chinyaku's Chiefdom, this project will enhance national energy security and self-sufficiency.
By engaging with local journalists and councillors, ZESCO is committed to transparency and public awareness, ultimately contributing to a more informed nation.
