ZAMBIA LOSES 300 MEGAWATTS POWER IMPORTS FROM MOZAMBIQUE DUE TO POWER PLANT SHUTDOWN READ MORE ON MEDIA RELEASE

Our Investments

ZESCO Limited has planned to invest USD 6.4 billion in project development across its operations to include power generation, transmission, distribution, and supply. The investment is projected for the period 2023 to 2031. The financing will be through debt and equity and complemented by Special Purpose Vehicles and Public Private Partnership model.

THE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY

Zambia has 3, 493 Mega Watts of installed power generation capacity as of 2022. Eighty Six percent (86%) of the national generation capacity was hydro based and the balance Fourteen percent (14%) was a mixture of thermal, heavy fuel oil and solar Photovoltaic (PV) generation.

The predominance of hydro based electricity opens the country to the risk of weather fluctuations, which have become more common owing to climate change.

Zambia's installed generation capacity is owned by various players in the Electricity Supply Industry, eight one percent (81%) is owned by ZESCO Limited and its subsidiaries. The balance of Nineteen percent (19%) is owned by Independent Power Producers. To exploit the energy spectrum potential, ZESCO Limited intends to invest in hydropower plants and alternative sources of energy such as solar, wind, geothermal and biogas to improve its energy mix and build climate change resilience.

Furthermore, ZESCO will also seek to increase its capacity of interconnections through projects such as ZIZABONA and Zambia–Tanzania–Kenya (ZTK) lines which will connect the Southern African Power Pool to the Eastern Africa Power Pool.
