ZESCO TO LIGHT UP 97TH AGRIC SHOW: SHOWCASING ZAMBIA'S ENERGY SHIFT AND CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION

As you step into the iconic Lusaka Show Grounds, a sea of vibrant colors and bustling activity greets you. But one thing stands out - a gigantic banner boldly proclaiming, "Adapting to Climate Change" captures your attention, setting the tone for a thought-provoking experience at the Agricultural and Commercial Show.

With only four days to go before the official opening of the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show, the national power utility, ZESCO Limited, is gearing up to showcase Zambia's energy shift towards a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

For over 50 years, hydro-electric power has been the backbone of Zambia's electricity generation. However, the recent drought-induced hydropower generation deficit, exacerbated by climate change, has prompted ZESCO to diversify its energy mix.

Zambia is now on the brink of building a climate-resilient energy system, with solar running ahead of wind and geothermal energy, as viable alternatives to hydroelectric power.

At this year’s show, ZESCO will highlight its efforts in building an evidence-based narrative showcasing Zambia's energy shift. The utility is embracing the future of energy by adapting, innovating, and investing in sustainable power sources, especially solar power.

Some of the notable projects include the recently inaugurated Chisamba 100MW solar plant and the upcoming Mansa 50MW, Kafue Gorge Lower, Siavonga, Kasama, Chipata West, and Mumbwa; all rated 100MW. There is also Mailo 100MW, Choma 50MW and Green Cities 211, all contributing to a brighter, cleaner electricity landscape.

As the Agricultural and Commercial Cooperative Society of Zambia (ACSZ) opens its gates to local and international exhibitors, ZESCO is poised to showcase its commitment to a sustainable energy future. With a bucketful of completed and ongoing sustainable and renewable energy projects, ZESCO is set to demonstrate its efforts in driving Zambia's energy shift and climate change adaptation.
